A Minecraft player reported that a pumpkin spawned on the block occupied by their tamed cat, trapping the cat inside and causing continuous suffocation damage. Although the player immediately broke the pumpkin, the pet died at the exact moment the block was destroyed.
According to the game's current mechanics, mature pumpkin vines will spawn pumpkins on adjacent empty dirt, grass, or farmland blocks, but the spawning process does not check whether a mob is standing in that position. As a result, cats can become trapped inside newly spawned pumpkin blocks and continuously suffer suffocation damage.
Tamed cats do not take fall damage, but their health pool is low, leaving players little time to react once they are trapped. Some players in the discussion pointed out that instead of breaking the block on the spot, it is better to quickly move away from the area; as long as the pet has not been ordered to sit, it may teleport to its owner to escape.
This incident also sparked discussions among players about pet survival mechanics. Some shared stories of cats and dogs walking into lava, drowning, touching cacti, crawling into open shulker boxes, or falling into portals, as well as tamed wolves accidentally dying while chopping dark oak trees.
Some players also noted that horses can regenerate health naturally, while cats and dogs cannot. Injured pets may remain at low health for extended periods, making it difficult for owners to notice if they are not paying close attention. Suggested changes include setting activity ranges for pets, adding items to disable teleportation, having pets become unconscious instead of dying outright, and introducing natural health regeneration mechanics.
Other players argued that pets being prone to danger is part of what makes them feel like companions, and making them completely invincible would weaken this sense of attachment. Currently, the Java Edition of Minecraft has mods such as Domestication Innovation, Pet Home, and Doggy Talents, which offer features like free-roaming pets, bound homes, or additional skills; however, participants in the discussion have yet to find similar options for the Bedrock Edition.
