"Destiny: The Taken King" Celebrates 11th Anniversary as Former VP Discusses Behind-the-Scenes Philosophy

It has been 11 years since the release of Destiny: The Taken King. Mark Noseworthy, former Vice President at Bungie, reflected on the development process, stating that this expansion remains his favorite and proudest work during his time with the Destiny series.

Noseworthy stated that the team felt the original Destiny was close to greatness but still lacked certain essential elements and required adjustments in development philosophy. During the development of The Taken King, "I love playing Destiny, but I hate that it isn't good enough" became the team's internal mantra.

In his view, The Taken King was more than just supplemental content. The expansion added substantial new material, enhanced narrative delivery, and expanded character builds, progression systems, and endgame activities, bringing greater clarity to the overall direction of the original Destiny.

The original Destiny initially struggled with an unclear identity. The first raid, "Vault of Glass," helped the team gradually establish its gameplay direction, while the subsequent release of The Taken King further refined the game's core framework.

This approach of refining core systems through major expansions later carried over to Destiny 2. After a rocky launch for the base game, Destiny 2: Forsaken similarly served to adjust various design elements and streamline the overall player experience.

Noseworthy left Bungie in 2024. Looking back on The Taken King years later, he still regards it as his favorite Destiny project as a player and his proudest achievement as a developer.
