Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has surpassed $1.68 billion in global cumulative box office receipts, overtaking Jurassic World to become Universal Pictures' highest-grossing film in history, rewriting the studio's eleven-year-old record.
Currently, The Odyssey has earned approximately $601 million at the North American box office, with over $1.08 billion coming from international markets. This achievement marks the highest box office performance of director Christopher Nolan's career.
Universal Pictures' previous record was held by Jurassic World, released in 2015. Starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, the film grossed approximately $1.67 billion worldwide.
During this period, Universal Pictures also released several films that grossed over $1 billion worldwide, including Furious 7, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and The Fate of the Furious, but none of these titles surpassed the performance of Jurassic World.
The Odyssey is adapted from Homer's epic poem and stars Matt Damon, with a runtime of nearly three hours. The film is rated R in the United States, requiring viewers under 17 to be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.
In addition to breaking Universal Pictures' global box office record, The Odyssey has become the highest-grossing R-rated film in cinematic history and set a new benchmark for IMAX theatrical releases.
