Stephen Root confirmed his participation in Grand Theft Auto VI and won his first-ever Emmy Award the following day. He thus becomes the second actor in the Grand Theft Auto series to win an Emmy.
Root confirmed his involvement in Grand Theft Auto VI on September 13. Previously, many had already guessed from his voice that he was the voice actor for Brian Heder, the drug transporter in the game, and Root later confirmed his connection to the title.
However, Rockstar has not yet officially announced the cast for Grand Theft Auto VI. The voice actors for the two protagonists, Lucia and Jason, as well as the identities of other major characters, remain undisclosed.
On September 14, Root won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in the Apple TV series Shantaram. This marks his first career Emmy. Root plays Wyck in the series, while Matthew Rhys portrays the protagonist Tom.
Before Root, James Woods was the only actor to appear in the Grand Theft Auto series and win an Emmy Award. He voiced the character Mike Toreno in 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Woods has won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor twice, for Promise (1987) and My Name Is Bill W. (1989). He also won a Daytime Emmy for voicing Hades in the Disney animated series Hercules.
In terms of game adaptations at this year's Emmys, Prime Video's Fallout Season 2 received 10 nominations and won two awards, including Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes and Outstanding Art Direction.
