Sony Pictures has confirmed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reached a cumulative North American box office of $936.773 million, surpassing the long-standing record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens to claim the top spot on the all-time North American box office chart.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released in 2015 and ultimately grossed $936.662 million in North America. At the time, it surpassed Avatar to take the top spot, subsequently holding off challenges from films such as Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day took just 47 days to surpass this milestone. In comparison, while Star Wars: The Force Awakens exceeded Avatar's record after 25 days in release, its final total of $936.662 million was accumulated over a lengthy 165-day theatrical run.
The current top five on the all-time North American box office chart are Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the 2009 version of Avatar. The North American box office totals for the latter three films are $858.373 million, $814.866 million, and $785.221 million, respectively.
With students returning to school, Spider-Man: Brand New Day's weekday box office has begun to decline. Last week, the film dropped to second place on the weekend box office chart for the first time, though it still earned $8.4 million over that weekend.
The film is still playing in theaters after breaking the record, so its North American cumulative box office will continue to rise. Its final total will exceed the currently reported $936.773 million.
