PlayStack confirmed that the success of Balatro has enabled the company to fund more projects and strengthened its confidence in continuing to take creative risks. However, the company will not shift to publishing a single genre and will maintain a diverse portfolio in the future.
Released in 2024, Balatro is a poker-themed deck-building game with light roguelike elements. Following its success and multiple awards, the market has seen more attempts to combine light roguelike gameplay with various creative concepts.
PlayStack CEO Harvey Elliott stated that the achievements brought by Balatro have not only expanded the company's funding capacity for projects but also confirmed that their original direction was effective, giving the team renewed confidence.
Elliott also emphasized that PlayStack does not aim to become a large-scale publisher releasing frequent new titles. The company expects to release around eight games this year, which he considers quite substantial, describing the current work pace as busy yet healthy.
Regarding the selection of indie game projects, Elliott believes that pursuing a 100% success rate is not an ideal goal. If publishers only choose safe and profitable titles, they may struggle to take sufficient creative risks and could miss ideas that are initially hard to understand but ultimately succeed.
He stated that an 85% success rate is a good figure, and even 70% is respectable; a 100% success rate might indicate that the company is filtering out projects worth trying. In May, Integrated Media Company acquired PlayStack for £125 million, and Elliott hopes the new shareholders will provide more opportunities for the company to take such risks.
