Nintendo has released system update 23.0.0 for the Nintendo Switch 2, officially enabling Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) in TV mode. This feature is currently implemented on a per-software authorization basis, with only "Nintendo Switch 2 Secret Exhibition" supported at present.
The Nintendo Switch 2 supported VRR on its handheld screen at launch, but TV mode remained unavailable. This feature arrives approximately 16 months after the console's release. In addition to updating the system software, users must manually upgrade the dock firmware via the settings menu.
VRR allows the display's refresh rate to dynamically adjust in real-time based on the game's output frame rate. When frame rates fluctuate, this technology helps reduce screen tearing and stuttering. The Nintendo Switch 2 supports a dynamic range of 40Hz to 60Hz in standard mode, along with low frame rate compensation up to 120Hz.
Using VRR in TV mode requires compatible display equipment. The console must be connected to an HDMI 2.1 TV or monitor with VRR capability; otherwise, this feature cannot be enabled.
Instead of universally enabling VRR for all software at the system level, Nintendo has implemented individual compatibility permissions. Developers need to include specific compatibility markers in their games and adapt them through updates. Existing titles will also require individual patches to gain support.
Currently, "Nintendo Switch 2 Secret Exhibition" is the only software supporting VRR in TV mode. Version 23.0.0 adds the corresponding option for this title, while other released software is not yet included in the compatibility list.
This update also adds data transfer functionality between Nintendo Switch 2 consoles, restores the background music for the Mii character creator, and introduces a Quick Boost Mode option for backward-compatible games.
