Former Rockstar Employee Says Grand Theft Auto VI Has Some Outdated Designs but Will Still Be a Huge Success

Mike York, a former Rockstar Games employee who worked on Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, believes that some design aspects of Grand Theft Auto VI feel "outdated and quirky." Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about the game, expecting it to achieve massive success.

York watched a 27-minute gameplay showcase. He praised the game's scale and world details but felt that some elements were inconsistent with the overall presentation, most notably the user interface, whose visual style differed from the tone of the graphics and Rockstar's usual design approach.

In York's view, Rockstar has sufficient resources to redesign these controversial elements, but the team may not prioritize doing so at this stage. He judges that developers are currently focusing primarily on final polishing and fixing critical issues before release.

York also analyzed the relationship between the two protagonists, Jason and Lucia. He described Jason as a more restrained and cautious planner, while Lucia is more proactive, often taking the lead in shootouts and trying to push her partner out of their comfort zone.

Discussing the internal environment at Rockstar, York stated that the company maintains strict confidentiality requirements, making employees very cautious about public appearances. Many developers do not maintain personal social media accounts to avoid accidentally leaking confidential information.

Although he anticipates some shortcomings at launch, York believes Grand Theft Auto VI will follow the trajectory of Grand Theft Auto V, receiving continuous updates via patches for years to come. He also predicts that the online mode could gradually evolve into a long-term platform, attracting millions of users over a decade. These views represent York's personal assessment of the game's prospects.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026.
