"Grand Theft Auto IV" Rainy Night in Liberty City Clip Sparks Discussion, Dan Houser Discusses Origins of Somber Tone

A short clip of Grand Theft Auto IV showcasing a rainy night in Liberty City has recently drawn renewed attention from players. Discussions around whether this gloomy atmosphere can be recreated in the series' new installment quickly expanded from nostalgia to the game's creative background.

Rockstar co-founder and lead writer of Grand Theft Auto IV, Dan Houser, previously linked the game's somber tone to his own state of mind at the time during a conversation with Lex Fridman. He stated that although he had lived in New York for several years, he was unsure if he was happy; only upon revisiting the work did he realize that its gloominess reflected his loneliness and confusion back then.

Uncertainty during development also influenced the work. Houser stated that after the controversy surrounding the "Hot Coffee" incident in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the studio feared it might shut down midway through the development of Grand Theft Auto IV, and this pressure and melancholy gradually seeped into the game.

Grand Theft Auto IV was released in 2008, when the financial crisis was hitting the United States. The game tells the story of Niko Bellic coming to Liberty City in pursuit of a new life, with themes of immigration and shattered ideals echoing the social backdrop of the era.

Players have mixed opinions on whether this atmosphere can be replicated. One view holds that the feelings from back then are inseparable from players' ages and personal experiences, making it difficult for a new title to bring people back to the state of 2008; another view cites Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2 as examples, arguing that Rockstar still has the ability to recreate the spirit of specific eras and environments.

The series has never had a uniform style. Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto IV are generally darker, while Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto V emphasize brighter colors and satirical expression. In these discussions, many veteran players are less concerned with graphical fidelity and more focused on Grand Theft Auto IV's color grading, overcast weather, and the dynamic motion effects brought by the Euphoria physics system.

The main setting for Grand Theft Auto VI is the sun-drenched Vice City and the state of Leonida, which presents a clear contrast to the cloud-shrouded Liberty City. However, some players believe that its industrial areas and potential severe weather could still support darker segments. The game is scheduled to launch on PS5 and Xbox Series platforms on November 19, 2026.
