Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was originally expected to develop into a trilogy, but the planned third installment was ultimately canceled. After the release of the first game and its sequel, Starkiller's story remained unfinished and has not been rebooted since.
The original game was released on September 16, 2008. The protagonist, Galen Marek, also known as "Starkiller," is Darth Vader's secretly trained apprentice. Initially ordered to hunt down surviving Jedi, Starkiller gradually begins to question his master and chooses a new path.
The story also connects Starkiller with characters such as General Rahm Kota and Bail Organa, touching on the origins of the Rebel Alliance. These plotlines are now part of the "Legends" continuity, which is no longer considered canon, but they attempted to bridge the gap between the two Star Wars film trilogies.
In terms of gameplay, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed emphasizes the destructive power of the Force. Starkiller can throw enemies, unleash Force lightning and Force push, and use his lightsaber to fight against the Imperial forces.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II was released on October 26, 2010. Players control a clone of Starkiller as he escapes Darth Vader's influence and searches for his own identity. The sequel added abilities such as dual-wielding lightsabers and expanded locations, but it faced criticism for its short length, repetitive gameplay, and weak storytelling.
A third installment, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed III, once entered the planning stages and could have continued Starkiller's story to complete the trilogy. However, the plan was canceled when LucasArts shut down in 2013. The project has not been revived since, leaving the stories of the two existing games without an official conclusion.
