Despite the controversies this year and AI-induced memory shortages, it has still been an exciting year for the gaming industry. We've seen great titles like Resident Evil Requiem, Red Desert, 007 First Light, Blood of Dawnwalkers, and GTA VI, with even more amazing games on the horizon.
However, a former lead developer at Naughty Dog.exe is dissatisfied with the current state of AAA games, believing they have become tedious. Citing the limited innovation in the new God of War title, God of War: Laufey, as an example, he expressed that looking at this game fails to spark any interest in him.
Bruce Straley, director of The Last of Us and Uncharted 4, recently gave an interview to Edge magazine, discussing today's AAA games. He stated that, overall, there seems to be no room for fresh and innovative ideas.
"I feel that the experiences and content we offer in the AAA space are, honestly, quite boring. When I really look at what you're doing in the game, I don't feel excited."
He said that God of War: Laufey is very well-made with excellent attention to detail, but the gameplay follows the same old formula and fails to excite him.
Bruce Straley mentioned that he has an idea for a AAA game, but it may never come to fruition. He also praised smaller-scale indie games, considering them more creative, with developers more willing to take risks, making them overall more interesting.
