Shuhei Yoshida and Adam Boyes Recreate PlayStation's Iconic Disc-Passing Scene at Tokyo Game Show

Shuhei Yoshida and Adam Boyes met again at the 2026 Tokyo Game Show and posed for a photo recreating PlayStation's old used-game disc advertisement. This time, however, they didn't bring out any game cases, instead miming the act by passing thin air.

This classic advertisement first appeared during Sony's E3 press event in 2013. At the time, Shuhei Yoshida, President of SCE Worldwide Studios, handed a physical copy of Killzone: Shadow Fall to Adam Boyes, then Vice President of Third-Party Relations and Developer Technology at PlayStation, demonstrating how PS4 game discs could be shared with a simple gesture.

When the ad was released, Microsoft's used-game policies for the Xbox One were under heavy scrutiny. Sony used this content to emphasize that sharing physical PS4 games was as simple as handing the disc to another player, making the video one of PlayStation's most widely shared promotional materials at the time.

Thirteen years later, the two individuals recreated the same pose at the Tokyo Game Show, but this time without any physical discs. The photo subsequently circulated online, with players calling it a homage to the iconic "passing the disc" moment from back then.

The reenactment coincided with ongoing controversy over Sony's decision to discontinue physical discs, which sparked a "Don't Kill the Disc" petition. By using air instead of a game case, the pair's photo once again ignited discussions surrounding physical game media.
