"Fate/New Chapter: Record" Revamps Combat System, Enhancing Strategy with Deck Building

"Record" has revealed more trial content and insights into its remake approach. The game transforms the original "Fate/EXTRA" rock-paper-scissors combat into a deck-building command battle system, while retaining the original story, iconic lines, and the core gameplay loop of gathering intelligence on opponents.

In battle, players must plan actions using the Command Cards drawn each turn, allocating attacks, defenses, skills, and support within limited AP. Using three Command Cards with Chain markers consecutively triggers an extra attack that doesn't consume AP. Masters can also use Code Casts to strengthen defense or replace their hand, and combine these with items that restore HP and MP to handle the flow of battle.

Each Servant has their own exclusive cards and deck. Saber can accumulate and merge Rose Commands to increase damage; Archer can deal continuous damage through chains, or use Hunter's Mark and Projection Noble Phantasms to pursue high burst damage; Caster specializes in delayed-effect spell tags and can inflict various debuffs on enemies.

The exploration phase still revolves around the seven-day time limit. Players must enter the "Arena," a labyrinth within the Spiritron World, to find trigger keys, develop their characters, and investigate opponents. Returning to the base mid-exploration consumes one day, so both exploration progress and remaining time must be carefully managed. After defeating the gatekeeper deep within a floor, players can obtain new Command Cards and gradually refine their deck.

Players will also encounter enemy Masters and Servants in the Arena. These encounters are limited to three turns, with objectives such as dealing 50 damage within the allotted turns or simply surviving, rather than directly defeating the opponent. The enemies' attack patterns, dialogue, and profiles provide clues to help players deduce their True Names, fighting styles, and weaknesses.

The remake also adds "Servant Time" interaction events, where players can learn about their Servants' preferences through dialogue, deepen their relationship, and boost the Servant's abilities. For character presentation, the game features 3D models based on designs by Wada Arco (rather than Takeuchi Takashi), combined with SPINE - This is Gun Fu animations, full voice acting, and visual novel-style text presentations during dialogue scenes.

Aniplex staff stated that the development team aimed to preserve the original's charm for veteran players while adding deeper gameplay mechanics suitable for modern JRPGs, leading to a complete overhaul of the game system. The final version allows players to use items and change Craft Essences during Arena runs. "Record" is scheduled for release on PC (Steam), PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28, 2027.
