Nintendo stated that the Nintendo Switch 2, which has been on the market for over a year, is still at the starting point of its lifecycle. The company has developed plans for the next few years, focusing not only on releasing games but also on continuing to expand its IPs into other entertainment areas such as film.
Devon Pritchard, President and COO of Nintendo of America, stated that the story of the Nintendo Switch 2 is "just beginning." Several titles from both Nintendo and third-party developers have already launched on the platform, and she looks forward to the development teams continuing to deliver new content in the future.
The multi-year plan also involves collaborations with companies such as Sony and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Pritchard stated that Nintendo aims to bring related entertainment experiences to existing players and fans through these partnerships and touchpoints, while also reaching new audiences.
Nintendo's previous console, the Nintendo Switch, was launched in 2017 and continued to be sold even after the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 in mid-2025. Nintendo has not yet announced a discontinuation date for the original Nintendo Switch, with both generations currently being sold simultaneously.
In recent years, Nintendo has gradually expanded its IP presence in the film industry, collaborating with Illumination to produce Super Mario movies. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in 2023, grossed over $1 billion worldwide, while its sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, reached $1.3 billion in global box office revenue.
In addition to expanding its film projects, Nintendo is preparing a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and a brand-new mainline entry in the Pokémon series. The next major film project is a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, with related games and cross-media collaborations forming part of its plans for the coming years.
