"I Am Legend 2" Development Faces Multiple Hurdles; Screenwriter Says Team Is Still Pushing Forward

The development of "I Am Legend 2" has encountered a series of obstacles, but the project has not been declared dead. Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman stated that the team is continuing to move forward and will do Everythinggj possible to facilitate the film's production.

Goldsman was recently asked about the status of "I Am Legend 2" while promoting his new film "Practical Magic 2." He admitted that he has encountered a string of unyielding obstacles and emphasized that the team is still trying to make the film a reality. The specific details of these obstacles have not yet been disclosed.

"I Am Legend 2" was announced for development in March 2022, with Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan slated to star. The current version is reportedly still set to feature Smith as the lead actor and producer, so the issues facing the project do not simply stem from his character's death in the original theatrical ending.

The sequel plans to be based on an alternative ending of the first film. In that ending, Dr. Robert Neville, played by Smith, realizes that the creatures only want to rescue their companion whom he had captured, and Neville himself survives. This change provides a narrative foundation for the character's return in the sequel.

The first "I Am Legend," adapted from Richard Matheson's novel of the same name, was released nearly 20 years ago and grossed over $585 million worldwide. The project also underwent multiple adjustments before becoming the final film; notably, Ridley Scott's version planned in 1997 was halted by Warner Bros. due to the budget rising to $100 million.

Goldsman later collaborated with Will Smith and director Francis Lawrence to complete the first film. Now, the sequel faces development challenges once again, but based on his latest statements, the creative team has not given up. There is no clear news yet on whether the film will enter actual production.
