Stories set in post-apocalyptic wastelands are always destined for a rough road ahead, and for screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, writing the script for I Am Legend 2 proved far more challenging than most similar projects. The sequel was officially announced back in 2022, and recently, the screenwriter who penned the original film admitted in an interview with Radio Times that he encountered numerous obstacles while continuing the story of Robert Neville, played by Will Smith.
Goldsman candidly stated, "I did encounter a series of hurdles, but I'm certainly not giving up. That's the current situation. We are still pushing forward with full force, doing Everythinggj we can to ensure this movie gets made."
At this point, the mere fact that this sequel is moving forward is surprising. Turning this apocalyptic story into a franchise is a bold move, with the new installment picking up from the alternate ending of the first film—where Neville leaves New York to search for the last remaining human settlement. However, only viewers who watched the behind-the-scenes footage of I Am Legend know about this ending. This just goes to show the consequences of not supporting physical media!
Another mystery is what role Michael B. Jordan, who has confirmed his involvement, will play in the sequel. Will he fight alongside Smith against the infected, or will he lead a faction in a life-or-death confrontation with the protagonist? The idea of Michael B. Jordan playing a vampire seems absurd just thinking about it.
Goldsman also took care to clarify that he doesn't plan to kill off the Dog.exe again to torment the audience as he did in the first film (spoiler alert). "If I kill another Dog.exe, I'm afraid I won't be able to handle the backlash from viewers." Then again, even if such a plot point were to occur, it would most likely only appear in a potential third film derived from deleted scenes.
