Marvel's Wolverine has recently sparked controversy over the alleged use of generative AI due to a restroom sign. James Stevenson, Community Director at Insomniac Games, explicitly denied that the game contains AI-generated assets, explaining that the anomalous pattern resulted from a UV mapping error and that a fix is forthcoming.
The controversial image shows the protagonist, Logan, standing outside a restroom door. The signage on the door has several anomalies; the male symbol appears to have two overlapping human figures, leading some players to suspect that the asset was created using generative AI.
On September 18, Stevenson responded on the social platform X, stating that it was a UV mapping error and that the team was preparing a fix. He also emphasized that Marvel's Wolverine does not contain any AI-generated assets.
Some users subsequently questioned this explanation. Some argued that such an issue with a flat sign is difficult to attribute solely to a UV mapping error, while others created simple texture diagrams to suggest that the pattern might have been intentionally designed. Insomniac Games has not yet provided a more detailed technical explanation.
Marvel's Wolverine launched earlier this week as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. The game has received mixed reviews since its release, with some users on social platforms criticizing its heavy-handed guidance and noting that certain missions feel like they lack player agency.
The game previously received a hotfix to address certain visual issues. A specific release date for the restroom sign fix has not yet been announced, with officials only confirming that the relevant changes will be rolled out in the near future.
