Recently, the official team behind the action-strategy sandbox game Kingmakers released a 12-minute gameplay demo and opened registration for a closed Beta test on Steam. However, the developers have yet to announce an exact release date.
Gameplay Demo:
Set during the 1403 Welsh uprising in medieval times, Kingmakers casts players as time travelers who return to the past equipped with full modern military gear. The game blends third-person shooter mechanics with real-time strategy elements. Players can personally charge into thousand-strong battles using assault rifles, grenade launchers, armored vehicles, and air support; or switch to a strategic view to command medieval armies, besiege castles, and establish strongholds. It supports up to 4-player co-op. Built on Unreal Engine 4, the project can simulate large-scale melees involving hundreds of soldiers on screen simultaneously.
The demo was originally intended to highlight the cross-era hybrid combat gameplay, but an opening cutscene unexpectedly became a hot topic online. In a carriage narrative sequence, a female character appears wearing a low-cut long dress. After this clip leaked, it quickly spread across overseas social networks, prompting the player community to create numerous memes and fan art. The official account even retweeted related meme posts, captioning them "Tradition Above All" to join in on the joke.
A large number of players have added the game to their Steam wishlists. Meanwhile, some critics online have argued that the character design deliberately caters to male fantasies and suffers from excessive sexualization. However, the current backlash remains limited in scale. Foreign media suggest that if future trailers continue to feature similar character portrayals, the game could face even larger-scale controversy as its release date approaches.
