At Tokyo Game Show 2026, Capcom offered the first playable demo of Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascension. The roughly two-hour early access experience showcased the Amplification Braces, the new monster Arakataka, the returning Teostra, and various changes to movement and weapon switching.
Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascension is a major expansion that continues the story of Monster Hunter Wilds, adding new regions, monsters, hunter actions, and higher-difficulty "Master Rank" quests. The TGS demo features three quests, allowing players to challenge the Amalgam, the alpha Gale Pterodon, and the high-difficulty Teostra.
The video begins with a challenge against the new bird wyvern species, "Gale Pterodon," introduced in Wilds: Ascension. Gale Pterodons inhabit the new region, "Cloudrest Ruins," and can move at high speeds using powerful air currents generated by their wings. Alpha individuals command their companions with calls, coordinating group attacks. During actual hunts, players must not only keep up with the Gale Pterodon's rapid positional changes but also deal with interference from other individuals, which may even gather in the air to launch consecutive high-speed charges.
Another core new system in Ascension, the "Amplification Braces," was also available for hands-on play during the demo. Hunters can accumulate energy through combat to activate a short-duration "Amplified State," which further enhances the unique characteristics of all 14 weapon types and unlocks exclusive "Amplified Actions."
The latter half of the video demonstration features a challenge against the high-difficulty "Teostra." In the latest trailer released by CAPCOM just before the opening of TGS 2026, it was officially announced that this familiar elder dragon from the series would return in Ascension, confirming that the "Resurrected Elder Dragon Subjugation Quest" at this year's TGS was indeed Teostra.
This hunt against Teostra takes place in "Oozing Oil Valley." In addition to its familiar fire breath, dust explosions, and charges, Teostra has gained new attack patterns. These include lifting its body high to slam its forelegs into the ground and even turning to track hunters while maintaining an upright posture. Combined with the oily terrain of Oozing Oil Valley, which hinders movement, finding space to dodge explosion attacks becomes much more challenging.
As the high-difficulty quest in this demo, Teostra boasts high attack power and a more aggressive offensive rhythm. Hunters must make good use of Wilds' existing Focus Mode and wound-breaking mechanics, along with Ascension's new Amplified Actions, to create opportunities for counterattacks.
