Valve Releases First System Update for Steam Frame, Significantly Speeding Up Charging During Shutdown and Sleep

Valve has released SteamOS 0.3.0 for the Steam Frame. This is the headset's first system update since its launch on September 14, focusing on improving charging speeds while the device is powered off or in sleep mode.

According to the patch notes, charging speeds when the device is powered off or in sleep mode have been significantly improved. Before the update, a Steam Frame with a depleted battery started charging at around 8W, peaking at 27W; after installing the update, the initial power is approximately 19W to 21W, reaching up to 42W while running games.

Valve recommends using a USB-C charger with a power output of at least 45W. The charger must be purchased separately and is not included in the $1,059 Steam Frame package.

SteamOS 0.3.0 also improves controller tracking when haptic feedback is enabled, and enhances device stability and reliability under high-load conditions. This update also fixes microphone audio distortion issues.

Previously, the "Force Always On" option for dynamic smoothing settings per application did not work properly; this issue has now been fixed. Valve has also adjusted dynamic smoothing performance in Half-Life: Alyx.

Changes for developers include Vulkan layer fixes and Mesa graphics performance optimizations. The Steam Frame's "Playable" certification standard no longer requires games to support 1440p resolution; other resolutions can also pass certification. Valve stated that SteamOS 0.3.0 is now available to all users.
