Capcom Confirms Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen for Switch 2 Will Use Frame Generation

Capcom has confirmed that Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Awakenings will use frame generation technology on the Nintendo Switch 2, inserting intermediate frames to achieve smooth visuals close to 60 FPS. This marks the first time Capcom has employed this technology in a Nintendo Switch 2 game.

Producer Naoto Oyama stated that the Nintendo Switch 2 version targets a base frame rate of 30 FPS in both handheld and docked modes. With frame generation enabled, the system inserts calculated intermediate frames between existing ones, bringing the overall display performance close to 60 FPS.

He also explained that native 60 FPS renders each frame individually and displays them directly, while frame generation requires calculating the images that might appear between two frames. Although both methods aim for 60 FPS, their underlying mechanisms are different.

Frame generation also has certain limitations. In some scenes, it is difficult to accurately interpolate frames, and Capcom has confirmed that slight ghosting may occasionally appear on screen. However, the development team determined that this issue would not significantly affect the overall gameplay experience, so they decided to offer this feature to players who prioritize frame rates.

The demo version of Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Awakenings has frame generation enabled by default, while the full release will allow players to toggle it on or off. Players can choose based on their preferences for visual smoothness and display quality.

Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Awakenings is an improved version of Dragon's Dogma 2, which was released in 2024, and is scheduled to launch on October 9, 2026.
