Zach Cregg's Resident Evil Film Accused of Borrowing Monster Designs from Inside and Left 4 Dead

Zach Cregg's new Resident Evil movie has been accused of borrowing monster designs from Inside and Left 4 Dead. The film does not directly recreate the game's plot, but instead follows a medical courier who goes to Raccoon City Hospital to deliver a package and gets caught up in a monster chase along the way.

The protagonist, Brian, hits a woman while driving through snowy roads and is subsequently attacked by her. While seeking help, he kills a man in self-defense, and the two bodies are then connected by tentacles, eventually merging into a constantly rolling human amalgamation. As the chase continues, this monster absorbs more corpses, growing larger and larger.

This design is considered similar to the puzzle-platformer horror game Inside, released in 2016. In that game, the boy eventually enters an experimental chamber and merges with a massive human mass known as the "Huddle"; the Huddle then rolls down a forested hillside. The monster in the film is similarly composed of multiple human bodies and chases the protagonist by rolling, but it does not swallow Brian.

Another similar design appears in the Raccoon City Hospital. The package Brian carries contains ingredients needed to treat the epidemic, and he needs to deliver it to the upper floors of the hospital. Due to damage to the hospital, he was originally advised to take the stairs, but after climbing four floors, he switched to the elevator, where he was attacked by monsters on the floors above.

The acid spat out by this monster corrodes the top of the elevator and eventually destroys the entire cabin. Its appearance and attack methods are said to combine the "Boomer" and "Spitter" from Left 4 Dead: the former vomits large amounts of bile on survivors, while the latter can spray corrosive mutated acid.

Although these two types of monsters are not directly from the Resident Evil games, they continue the series' common body horror style. The infection forms in the film are also considered similar to the parasitic organisms in Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5; the first Dog.exe that attacks Brian is directly taken from the game series, with other monsters such as a little girl and rat-men also appearing.
