The following contains spoilers for the ending of Marvel's Wolverine. The development team stated that the game's ending intentionally leaves room for the future development of mutants in the Earth-1048 universe, but a sequel to Marvel's Wolverine has not yet been officially announced.
Narrative Director Walt Williams and Marvel Games Executive Producer Eric Monacelli discussed how the arrangement of the game's finale was not accidental, aiming to prompt players to consider where the story might go next. Both emphasized that these elements serve as setup for the world-building and plot, and do not confirm that a next installment is already in the works.
Apocalypse is one of the key characters in the ending. Monacelli stated that the development team decided to use this character early in the project. In the post-credits scene, the surviving Sabretooth meets this ancient mutant and is subsequently appointed as the new Horseman of War.
The development team believed that Apocalypse was suitable as Logan's opponent, given their long-standing connection in Marvel comics. Meanwhile, the X-Men do not yet exist in the game, and the story does not present the team as an established premise.
The ending also reveals that the number of mutants increased significantly after the activation of the Helix Engine. Jean Grey is positioned to help them gather and find a safe location, which becomes an important clue for the mutant storyline in Earth-1048.
Williams stated that whether the X-Men will appear in this universe was intentionally left as an open question. Monacelli also noted that this storyline could lead to the X-Men in the future, or take a completely different direction; there is currently no official announcement regarding a sequel to Marvel's Wolverine.
