New StarCraft Shooter Aims to Deliver Real Tension for Players

In a recent interview with foreign media, Dan Hay, General Manager and Creative Director of the new StarCraft shooter, explained the design philosophy behind shifting the IP from an RTS top-down perspective to a third-person shooter.

The new StarCraft shooter is a story-driven open-world shooting game within the StarCraft IP. It is not a seasonal live-service game and features a complete, self-contained story with a definitive ending. Scheduled for release in 2030, the project is currently in early development.

The key design keyword for switching from the RTS god-view to third-person ground combat is "tension." In past RTS games, players commanded hundreds or thousands of troops, but in the new title, players are ordinary Marine soldiers clad in CMC power armor, without large-scale backup, forced to face the oppression brought by Zerg and Protoss forces head-on.

Hay emphasized the design philosophy: every bullet counts, and every action taken by the player has consequences. Combat does not aim for mindless slaughter; instead, it seeks to make players genuinely feel the cruelty and danger of war within the StarCraft universe. Every discussion and concept art session ultimately centers on the idea of "grounded soldiers," naturally steering the project toward a ground-based shooter direction.

The development team needs to redesign enemy AI, power armor movement feedback, weapon damage, and environmental interactions. For example, facing a ten-foot-tall Hydralisk up close allows players to truly feel the intimidation caused by the enemy's size—an experience impossible to achieve with an RTS top-down view. Players can freely explore an open world and leverage conflicts between different factions to achieve their goals. The game aims to cater to both new and veteran players by retaining classic iconic elements like CMC power armor and Gauss Rifles while lowering the barrier to entry for the IP.

The story of the new StarCraft shooter is rooted in the original StarCraft universe, exploring classic themes such as flawed characters and frontier conflicts. However, official details regarding specific plot developments and launch platforms have not yet been revealed.
