Cross-Game Asset Reuse Prohibited: GTA 6 Modding Faces Multiple Restrictions

Rockstar recently released a Community Resources Guide, imposing several restrictions on mod creation for its games, including the yet-to-be-released Grand Theft Auto VI. As news about this highly anticipated title continues to emerge, these new mod rules have raised concerns about creative freedom after its launch.

X user TheNathanNS noticed these guidelines. Among other things, Rockstar prohibits porting content from one of its games to another, modifying official stories or characters, or adding content centered around them. Using mods to run games on hardware not officially supported by Rockstar is also restricted.

The guidelines also prohibit the use of copyrighted characters, brands, music, and other content in mods. Recreating real-world locations is not allowed, nor is using the likeness or voice of real people. Regarding online play and commercial activities, the rules forbid creating or sharing cheat tools for official multiplayer services, as well as unauthorized or abusive monetization of mods.

These restrictions do not amount to a complete ban on modifying game files, but they cover various types of creation such as story expansions, character modifications, and asset reuse. Rockstar has previously shut down large-scale mod projects, including an effort to restore cut content from GTA V, so these concerns are not limited to the upcoming title.

Grand Theft Auto VI will launch exclusively on consoles, so the impact of mod restrictions during this phase will be relatively limited. On PC, mods have long supplemented Rockstar's open-world games. The NoPixel roleplay server for GTA V, for instance, began as a large-scale mod project.
