Blizzard Hopes to Add Open-World Challenges and Improve Leveling Experience in World of Warcraft: The Last Titan

Blizzard hopes to provide a more challenging and rewarding outdoor experience for players in the next World of Warcraft expansion, The Last Titan. Game Director Ion Hazzikostas stated that the team is considering a design similar to a "Heroic World Tier," giving players who wish to increase outdoor difficulty corresponding options.

During BlizzCon 2026, details on future content for World of Warcraft's retail version were limited. The current expansion for the retail version is Midnight, with the next one, The Last Titan, set in Northrend. Blizzard has not yet provided detailed information about its specific content.

Meanwhile, World of Warcraft: Everlasting is in testing and scheduled for release in mid-November. It is redesigned based on the original World of Warcraft experience, retaining the early visual style and simpler gameplay while emphasizing immersion in open-world exploration and the leveling process. This raises the question of whether the retail version will continue to improve similar experiences.

Addressing this issue, Hazzikostas made it clear that the team would not ignore problems in the retail version just because another version is available. He acknowledged that the retail version indeed falls short in related experiences, and Blizzard hopes to address this, refusing to tell players seeking outdoor challenges to "just play Classic." He believes that every version of World of Warcraft should offer such experiences.

Blizzard has previously attempted to increase difficulty during the "Legion" remix event and a recent mid-season update, including adding Heroic mode to certain solo areas, disabling flying mounts, and buffing monsters. Hazzikostas believes these attempts have potential and hopes that The Last Titan will offer similar options to make outdoor exploration more challenging and goal-oriented; however, this is still a direction the team wishes to pursue and has not been confirmed as an official feature.

Hazzikostas also stated that Blizzard is aware of the shortcomings in the new player experience for the retail version and plans to adjust this aspect again in the future.
