Taito has announced Lufia I & II: Rise of the Sinistrals, scheduled to launch on PS5, Switch 2, and PC in 2027. This collection features two SNES RPGs, both being direct ports of the originals rather than remakes.
The first game was released in 1993 and has not been re-released since. According to the announced plan, it will arrive on modern platforms after 34 years. The sequel was launched in Japan in 1995 and in North America in 1996. Until now, players needed official SNES cartridges to experience these two titles.
The first game tells a story spanning two generations of heroes: the original heroes battle the Four Fiends entrenched in the Doom Fortress, while much of the gameplay follows their descendants as they confront the returning enemies.
In terms of story, the sequel is a prequel to the first game, recounting the experiences of the heroes featured in the original's prologue and depicting their initial sealing of the Four Fiends. This re-release includes only the first two titles in the series.
Both games feature traditional turn-based combat, requiring players to explore dungeons, battle monsters, and manage their party and equipment. The sequel also introduces a monster collection mechanic, allowing players to obtain Capsule Monsters that can join battles as a fifth party member, along with several mini-games involving gambling elements.
The first trailer for this title was revealed at the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct. The current release window is set for 2027, with no specific date confirmed yet.
