Rockstar has confirmed that the boxed edition of GTA VI will include only a download code, with no game disc included; meanwhile, the game's soundtrack will be released on CD and vinyl. With about two months remaining until the game's scheduled release on November 19, 2026, this decision has sparked mockery and dissatisfaction among players.
This marks the first time in the series that a physical game disc is not included in the retail box. Previously, boxed editions came with paper maps and detailed manuals; this time, players purchasing the boxed version in stores will receive only a sheet with a download code.
Publisher Take-Two attributed this choice to hardware updates and changing consumer habits, citing the growing prevalence of disc-less consoles as justification. Once redeemed, the download code binds to a PlayStation Network or Xbox Network account, meaning players can no longer lend, trade, or resell the game as they could with a physical disc.
The soundtrack, released in collaboration between Rockstar and Atlantic Records, features 34 original tracks created for the game. The physical album is also set to launch on November 19. The collector's edition vinyl, containing blue liquid, sold out within minutes of appearing on the Rockstar official store, while Fnac, Cultura, and Blood Records offered exclusive colored versions.
On September 17, numerous users questioned the publisher's posts, asking why music could be released on CD and vinyl while the game itself had no disc. The irony of having a physical soundtrack but no physical game copy was not lost on them.
Some independent retailers have also responded. Video Games Plus and the French store La Console du Temps have publicly announced they will boycott selling the game. These businesses rely on the second-hand market and believe that boxes containing only download codes threaten their business model, leading them to refuse to stock the title.
