The open-source emulator PS5X can now run a small number of PS5 games on the Xbox Series X, including Quake II and Marvel Cosmic Invasion. The project is still in its early stages of development and currently supports only four titles.
YouTube content creator Devran Cosmo Uenal ported the open-source emulator KytyPS5 to Microsoft consoles via developer mode, naming the project PS5X. In addition to the two games mentioned above, currently supported titles include Jaxx Trilogy and Hellboy: The Wild Network. All four games can receive input from Xbox controllers, with some also supporting audio playback.
Uenal also released a video showing Quake II running on the Xbox Series X. In the demo, the game runs at approximately 25 to 45 FPS. The project developers stated that there is still a lot of work to be done before compatibility reaches an acceptable level.
Graphics rendering is one of the main challenges in the porting process. The PC version of KytyPS5 uses Vulkan for rendering, but the Xbox Series X does not natively support Vulkan, requiring the rendering to be converted to DirectX 12. This also means that improvements made to the PC emulator cannot be automatically applied to the Xbox version.
The PC version of KytyPS5 has also seen recent progress: Demon's Souls Remastered has improved from being completely unplayable to running at a stable 30 FPS, while Grand Theft Auto V can run at up to 60 FPS on high-end PC hardware. PS5X still has significant limitations, with support currently restricted to the aforementioned four games.
