On September 21, Riot Games announced that the League of Legends Championship Pacific (LCP) will reform its tournament structure starting in 2027. Teams will return to their respective regions, first competing in the PCS, VCS, or LJL each split before earning promotion to the LCP based on performance, changing the previous arrangement where all teams competed centrally in Taipei.
Under the current system, regional league teams have only one chance per year to compete for an LCP slot through promotion qualifiers. After the reform, all regional teams in the PCS, VCS, and LJL will have the opportunity to vie for promotion every split. The top-performing teams will advance to the LCP playoffs to compete for the regional championship and qualification for global events.
The pathway for wildcard regions to qualify for the LCP will remain, with specific slot allocations and tournament formats to be announced in the coming months. The LCP will continue to be the premier League of Legends esports competition in the Asia-Pacific region and the sole route for Pacific teams to reach global events such as the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) and the World Championship.
Riot Games stated that the current system requires many teams to relocate to Taipei, resulting in high costs and reducing opportunities for direct interaction with local fans. Players also face challenges from being away from their hometowns and loved ones for extended periods throughout the long season.
Riot aims to reduce operational costs by having teams return to their home regions, increase opportunities for interaction with fans and partners, and shorten the time most players spend away from family and friends, thereby creating a better environment for player development and competition.
Regarding revenue distribution, Riot Games has committed to continuing regional GRP (Global Revenue Pool) shares for existing LCP teams during the 2027 season, covering teams that successfully promote or retain their slots in the upcoming promotion qualifiers. Any team participating in these qualifiers that secures an LCP slot will become eligible for this revenue share.
Furthermore, any team that advances through the LCP and subsequently qualifies for global events will also be eligible to receive a share of the Global Revenue Pool (GRP) from those global events.
