The team has also left room for the series to continue and has begun exploring potential new directions for a second season, but HBO and DC Studios have not yet officially renewed the show.
The series is one of the key projects in the new DC Universe, starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. The two Green Lanterns uncover a larger secret while investigating a mysterious murder in rural America. The series adopts a crime, detective, and neo-noir style, with the story spanning two different time periods.
Mundy stated that Guy Gardner was included in the planning from the early stages of the project. The character, portrayed by Nathan Fillion, previously appeared in the film Superman, and his appearance in Green Lantern helps viewers determine the timeline of the story.
The series will further highlight Guy Gardner's comedic elements. Mundy noted that James Gunn already presented the character in a comedic light in Superman, allowing the series to take it a step further, especially when Guy first interacts with John, as their relationship carries a certain hostility.
Regarding a major plot point in the premiere episode, Mundy stated that the writing team did not make the decision lightly, but rather laid the emotional groundwork in advance. The impact of this event will resonate throughout the season, aiming to deepen the audience's understanding of John and Hal and serve the development of both characters.
Mundy emphasized that Season 1 is not part of a larger narrative plan, nor does it simply serve to advance the overall DCU story. Although characters like Guy Gardner and Sinestro will appear in the series, this season will focus on Hal and John's story and conclude the main case.
Another creator, Damon Lindelof, previously revealed that if Season 1 is well-received by audiences, there are many more stories that can be explored. Mundy has also assembled a new writers' room to study potential follow-up content. Currently, these efforts remain part of creative preparation and do not indicate that Season 2 has been approved.
