Recently, Tom Maribu, Apple's new Vice President of Hardware Engineering, shared details about product design. This position was previously held by John Ternus, Apple's current CEO.
According to reports, Tom Maribu discussed the design of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo during a group interview at Apple's London headquarters. He detailed the quality improvements of the second-generation Ceramic Shield and expressed that he was "particularly proud" of the durability of the iPhone Duo's hinge.
Maribu stated, "Personally, I feel quite uncomfortable when I see someone applying a screen protector to an iPhone."
"Because we have invested significant effort into creating a beautiful front screen. Therefore, we specifically aimed to develop a new coating that effectively resists scratches while also being wear-resistant.We were concerned about both scratches caused by sharp objects and surface wear from long-term use. It turns out that in many materials, it is often difficult to balance performance in these two areas."
It is understood that the second-generation Ceramic Shield glass was first introduced with the iPhone 17 series, offering three times the scratch resistance of its predecessor and receiving positive market feedback within its first year. Both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo feature the second-generation Ceramic Shield on their front screens.
