PS5 Pro Supply Shortages to Last Until Early 2027 Due to GTA 6 Impact

German media outlet PlayFront reports that Sony has alerted retail partners that PS5 Pro supply shortages could last at least until early 2027. With GTA 6 scheduled for release on November 19, PS5 Pro stocks are already running low in some regions as the launch approaches.

With GTA 6 set to release on November 19, 2026, demand for Sony's most powerful gaming console, the PS5 Pro, has surged dramatically. The PS5 Pro frequently sells out on store shelves, and some units on the secondary market are being sold at prices far above the official retail price. According to German media outlet PlayFront, Sony has warned its distribution partners that this situation could persist until early next year.

Limited Stock to Last Until Early 2027

PlayFront claims to have obtained an internal communication from Sony sent to its distribution partners. Reportedly, Sony mentioned "temporary market supply constraints and strong demand" for the PS5 Pro in the communication. Crucially, this situation is expected to last at least until "early 2027." Since the document has not been made public, this information is currently based on reports from the German media outlet.

This doesn't necessarily mean the PS5 Pro will be completely out of stock in the coming months. Restocks are expected, but they may be sporadic and sell out quickly. In the US, PlayStation Direct and several major retailers are already experiencing shortages. The situation is equally tense in Europe: in France, recent online channels from several distributors have been unable to offer the console, while third-party sellers have taken the opportunity to raise prices, with some listings exceeding €1000.

GTA 6 Drives Surge in Demand

This surge in popularity is largely driven by GTA 6. Rockstar's new title is scheduled to launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, with no PC version available at launch. As a result, PC gamers who want to experience the game on day one will have to use consoles. For those seeking the best performance within the PlayStation ecosystem, the PS5 Pro naturally becomes the top choice, even though GTA 6 will also run on the standard PS5.

This impact is already evident in physical stores. Carrefour recently told Tom's Guide that sales of PS5 and Xbox consoles saw double-digit growth this summer, with GTA 6 pre-orders reaching record highs. Stock of the PS5 Pro became particularly tight after the extended gameplay demo was released in late August, even though the video was actually recorded on a standard PS5.

Restocks may not be enough

Therefore, the main issue may lie in whether Sony can supply retailers in time. PlayFront points out that it could take weeks or even months from increased production to the new consoles actually arriving in the European market. Even if production ramps up quickly, there is no guarantee that supply will normalize before Christmas, a period when demand is expected to grow further.

The release of GTA 6 could escalate existing tensions into a real headache for buyers. According to reports, if the PS5 Pro remains in short supply, Sony expects some demand to shift to other PS5 models. Consoles will continue to arrive in batches, but players who planned to wait patiently until November 19 to make their purchase might find that GTA 6 is easier to get than their desired console.
