Microsoft Secures New Patent for In-Game Ads That Dynamically Pause Gameplay

Tech media outlet Tom's Hardware and gaming media Respawn First recently revealed a new Microsoft patent: a system capable of dynamically pausing gameplay to insert advertisements for players. Below is the core statement from the summary of the U.S. published patent (Publication No. US 202610260258 A1, titled "Context-Aware Management of Access to Interactive Software Applications"):

"The content management system may pause user interaction with an interactive software application based on promotional content trigger events."

"The content management system may present promotional audio and video content to the user."

"The content management system may establish a points mechanism... points can delay the suspension of user interaction."

微软获游戏内广告新专利 可动态暂停游戏插播广告

In short, this is an in-game advertising system that directly pauses the game and interrupts player actions to play ads. Similar to the ad-supported model of mobile games, Microsoft has also designed a points system where players can redeem points for longer ad-free gameplay sessions.

Microsoft explains that video games cannot have fixed regular ad breaks like TV shows, so a system based on points, partially controllable by players, is needed to manage ad delivery. Additionally, this system monitors gameplay in real time to avoid inserting ads during climactic moments or when the player is fully engaged. How thoughtful.
