Sony's rumored PS6 handheld could become the only portable gaming device using a dedicated semi-custom RDNA 5 chip. Industry insiders have reportedly discussed the handheld having "some form of exclusivity" regarding RDNA 5, but these claims have not been officially confirmed.
This "exclusivity" may not stem from an exclusive agreement between Sony and AMD, but is more likely determined by the order volume required for semi-custom processors. AMD is reportedly being more cautious about committing engineering resources to niche products.
Leaker Kepler_L2 previously claimed that if Microsoft wanted AMD to develop a dedicated chip for an Xbox handheld, it might need to commit to purchasing at least 10 million units. In comparison, Sony's projected production volume may be more attractive to AMD. If these reports are accurate, other handhelds may continue to adopt RDNA 4 solutions.
Project Amethyst has publicly unveiled Neural Arrays, Radiance Core, and Universal Compression technologies, which could improve image reconstruction, ray tracing, memory bandwidth, and power efficiency on portable devices. However, it remains uncertain whether they will be used in this rumored handheld. Currently, the device itself, chip specifications, pricing, game lineup, and release schedule have not been officially confirmed.
