Despite the spotlight of being China's first AI-produced feature film to receive a public screening license, the market performance of "Sanxingdui: Future Past" after its release has starkly contrasted with earlier expectations from the capital market.According to data from Maoyan Professional, as of 20:22 on October 25, the film's cumulative box office revenue after three days was only 1.152 million yuan, with an attendance rate as low as 1.1% and an average of just 1.1 viewers per screening.
Produced by Bona Film Group, the 100-minute film features entirely original digital characters without any real-human scanning or replication. A team of nearly 100 people at Bona spent two years and invested tens of millions in production. With ticket prices around 30 yuan, the market response has been lukewarm, and current projections estimate total box office revenue at only 2.5 million yuan.
The film blends the ancient Shu civilization of Sanxingdui with science fiction elements. The story revolves around mysterious inscriptions on bronze artifacts: as future humanity faces an existential crisis triggered by super AI, the Sanxingdui relics hold the key codes to resolve the crisis. The protagonists embark on an adventure to uncover the hidden connections between the ancient Shu civilization and the future world.
Notably, this film is adapted from an AI sci-fi short drama series of the same name, which previously garnered nearly 200 million views on short-video platforms.
In terms of the capital market, Bona Film Group's stock hit the daily limit up shortly after announcing the release date for "Sanxingdui: Future Past" in late September. It then recorded two consecutive limit-ups on October 9 and October 12. However, after the initial hype faded, the stock price continued to decline, dropping by 10.06% at the opening today (October 26).
