John Romero introduced an unannounced new shooter from Romero Games. The project is being developed using Unreal Engine 5.8, with free movement and environmental exploration at its core. Players can change their current objectives as new locations, side content, and unexpected events emerge.
Romero cited The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as an example, noting that players might initially head toward a distant tower but constantly discover other interesting things along the way, eventually forgetting their original goal. He also mentioned the mysterious atmosphere, hidden locations, and surprises during exploration in Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, expressing his hope that the new title will deliver a similar sense of discovery.
However, Romero did not explicitly confirm whether the project is a full open-world game. What is certain is that the new title will remain true to the roots of the shooter genre while not forcing players to follow a fixed path.
The project was nearly canceled after its original publisher, Microsoft, abruptly withdrew funding. Romero Games subsequently secured a new publisher and resumed development. While the game's structure has undergone significant adjustments, the team is still utilizing a considerable portion of content and assets from the previous iteration. The official title, release date, and target platforms for the new game have not yet been announced.
Alfonso John Romero, born on October 28, 1967, is a renowned figure in the video game industry. He co-founded id Software with John Carmack in 1991 and enjoys a prestigious reputation in the field.
