"Like a Dragon: Ishin!" Drops Last-Gen Platforms for Enhanced On-Screen Character Count and Quality

RGG Studio has confirmed that Like a Dragon: Ishin! will no longer support last-gen platforms such as the PS4, shifting its development focus to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto stated that this choice allows the team to increase the number of on-screen characters and further enhance character quality.

《异于天堂》放弃上世代平台 同屏角色数量与品质提升

During Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show 2026, Hiroyuki Sakamoto explained that the team aims to create a completely new game, delivering the highest possible quality under current conditions. Past hardware limitations forced developers to reduce the number of characters on screen, meaning some original ideas could not be retained.

This title will make fuller use of the PS5's performance, allowing more characters to appear on screen than ever before. Sakamoto believes that by reducing hardware compromises, the final visual experience will be richer and have stronger artistic distinctiveness compared to the studio's previous projects.

RGG Studio had long engaged in cross-generation development, with Like a Dragon 8 launching on two generations of PlayStation and Xbox platforms. While subsequent titles no longer support Xbox One, they still retained PS4 versions. The platform adjustments for Like a Dragon: Ishin! mark the end of this cross-generation development phase.

Like a Dragon: Ishin! will depict a journey spanning multiple eras, set in early 20th-century Japan, and is scheduled for release on January 15, 2027.
