Final Fantasy XIV Housing Interior Expansion Delayed Again, Coming in Patch 8.1

One of Final Fantasy XIV's most anticipated housing updates has been delayed again. This news was announced at the recent Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival held in Japan, disappointing fans.

Final Fantasy XIV has delayed the release of its new expansion, "Echoes of Vana'diel," by about a month, as the development team needs more time to ensure all content is complete and polished. However, another feature has faced an even longer delay, leaving fans waiting for quite some time.

During the keynote address at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Tokyo, Japan, Director Naoki Yoshida discussed the planned housing updates. This update allows players to pay to upgrade the interior space of small and medium housing plots to match that of large plots, but it has now been delayed once again.

Naoki Yoshida stated that the update has now been pushed to version 8.1. While no exact date has been announced, version 7.1 launched approximately four months after the Dawntrail 7.0 expansion, so players should not expect version 8.1 to arrive before June 2027.

Version 8.1 will also bring several other changes to the game's housing system.

The game will introduce a new housing placement interface, allowing players to place furniture directly in mid-air; currently, achieving this effect relies on complex floating techniques exploiting game glitches. Additionally, the update will add more housing plots, which should help alleviate the long-standing supply shortage, as the current system does not provide enough plots to meet player demand. However, Naoki Yoshida did not specify whether these new plots will be added to existing districts or if new housing districts will be introduced.

The news of another delay for housing interior expansions is particularly frustrating for players, as this is not the first time the feature has been postponed.

It was initially announced in 2024, originally scheduled to launch in a patch cycle following version 7.1. The feature was then further delayed in early 2026, though it was still considered likely to arrive within the post-Dawntrail patch cycle. If it does launch in version 8.1 as recently promised, this new feature will finally debut three years after its initial announcement.

Thankfully, Final Fantasy XIV has recently made some improvements to the housing system, including new interior styles and increased limits for storage and furniture. However, retaining a house in Final Fantasy XIV requires maintaining a paid subscription and logging in regularly. Players who have stayed active to ensure they can eventually upgrade their homes are growing weary of this requirement.

World of Warcraft's recently launched housing system, which neither requires an active subscription nor limits plot availability, is likely to add to the frustration of Final Fantasy XIV players. Fortunately, Final Fantasy XIV still has plenty of non-housing content to look forward to in the near future.
