Skyblivion is a massive mod project developed by fans over ten years, aiming to remake The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion within the framework of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Just as the project was nearing completion, it encountered an unexpected setback in the form of a lawsuit from a former volunteer.
The team stated: "After this member left the project, we engaged in multiple discussions regarding whether to continue using and maintaining their contributions. The core disagreement centered on their opposition to our decompiling certain parts of their work. However, after they revoked access to the original codebase, decompilation became necessary to ensure the proper functioning of existing systems and to address related issues."
"Ultimately, despite our ongoing efforts to resolve our differences, the other party escalated the conflict by sending legal threats and even demanding the real names and home addresses of our volunteer team leads. We cannot accept such a request and believe it falls entirely outside the bounds of reason. This approach of 'walking away at the first sign of disagreement and taking all work with you' fundamentally contradicts the spirit of collaboration and openness that defines the modding community—a spirit that makes large-scale fan projects like this possible."
To protect its members, the Skyblivion team removed all contributions from this former volunteer and began reconstructing the corresponding systems from scratch. Yet, even after all relevant code was replaced, the threats from the other party have not ceased.
The team explained: "We never intended for things to reach this point, nor did we want to take a former team member to court. To spare our volunteers unnecessary stress and to draw a clear line, we acted in good faith by removing all of their code and rebuilding and optimizing the system from scratch. Despite this, the other party has continued to escalate their threats."
For a non-profit fan mod that has been in development for over a decade, this is undoubtedly a significant setback. However, the team also urges fans not to engage in personal attacks or online harassment against the individual involved.
The statement concluded: "Although behind-the-scenes conflicts may continue to escalate, we sincerely wish this former volunteer all the best and hope to resolve this matter soon so that we can proceed with the Skyblivion launch as planned."
Skyblivion was originally scheduled for release in late 2025 but was delayed until 2026. As the year draws to a close, no specific launch date has been announced. Having to rebuild code from scratch while dealing with potential litigation clearly hinders progress. Nevertheless, the team has assured fans that they are "working hard to finalize the project" and will share more information about the release date soon.
