Five Nights at Freddy's has taken the internet by storm for over a decade, spawning numerous sequels, diverse spin-offs, and even a feature film, continuously expanding the IP's universe. Although the series has become ubiquitous in the gaming industry, it has also inspired many creative projects that reinterpret the core design concepts of the original FNAF in entirely new directions.
Although this latest release isn't the first spiritual successor in the series, it incorporates elements from the Jurassic Park IP and introduces mutation mechanics. Even more excitingly, Matthew Patrick (MatPat), host of the popular Game Theory channel and actor in the Five Nights at Freddy's movie, will voice one of the main characters.
Developed by WDR Studio, the indie horror game Lizard Horror launched on Steam this October. The story follows a teenager named Jordan who is forced to explore an abandoned dinosaur-themed roadside attraction, gradually uncovering the dark secrets hidden within the area. Parts of the narrative are presented through live-action footage, with MatPat portraying a rogue scientist responsible for creating these mutated monsters.
Lizard Horror's gameplay is closer to a blend of Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach and Poppy Playtime: players explore linearly through a massive park facility, using parkour mechanics to navigate various scenes. Nevertheless, the game includes many design elements that will feel familiar to longtime FNAF fans, which is precisely why this indie title has garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam since its release.
The monsters in the game are far more than just eerily designed mascots. The creatures featured in Lizard Horror boast truly terrifying appearances, with twisted body structures and bizarre proportions that go well beyond the conventional designs of typical dinosaur-themed horror games—such as the upcoming Jurassic Park: Survival, which adheres to a more traditional style.
If you'd like to experience Lizard Horror for yourself, the indie game offers a free demo, allowing you to explore the dilapidated dinosaur exhibit without paying full price.
