New classification records from the Australian government indicate that the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will soon be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series platforms.
Compared to previous years, 2026 has been quite generous for Call of Duty fans. The latest entry, Modern Warfare 4, has exceeded expectations in both reviews and sales, while Activision continues to release modern platform ports of older titles to satisfy nostalgic players.
Earlier this year, the original Black Ops and its futuristic sequel were both ported to modern consoles, retaining all multiplayer modes. While these two titles weren't exactly polished HD remasters and were priced higher than most players expected, they did allow fans to revisit the classic Call of Duty experience. Now, another beloved classic from the series seems poised to receive the same treatment.
Reddit user scott1swann discovered in the "Game Leaks and Rumors" subreddit that the Australian Classification Board has added a listing for the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2—one of the most classic and influential entries in the entire series. The classification request was submitted on October 1st and only recently caught players' attention.
Although the rating information does not specify the platforms for this new port, and aside from being rated R18+ there are no further details, it is almost certain that this is a modern platform port similar to the recent Black Ops series releases. In other words, this title will be a relatively lightweight port, featuring the full campaign mode and the popular multiplayer gameplay.
If anyone doubts that this is a port of the original Modern Warfare 2 or worries about the absence of multiplayer, keep in mind that the 2009 original's campaign was already officially remastered a few years ago. There's no reason for Activision to re-release the campaign remaster—since it's easily accessible across all platforms—so this is almost certainly a complete port of the Black Ops-style package.
As for when we can dive back into Modern Warfare 2 matches, I personally believe it's unlikely to launch before 2027. With Modern Warfare 4 just released, Activision and Xbox will likely want to keep player attention focused on the new title before releasing the Modern Warfare 2 port, which is practically a cash cow.
