Overwatch may still bring back playable PvE narrative missions in the future, but this does not mean the full story campaign has been revived. Game Director Aaron Keller stated that while the team won't completely rule out the return of PvE content, recreating a full campaign would be a project of an entirely different scale.
Keller recalled that previous PvE events drew significant attention upon release and helped advance the game's lore, but player engagement did not meet the team's expectations, with interest dropping off quickly afterward. Such missions require substantial development resources; in comparison, narrative formats like animated shorts can tell stories with far less development overhead.
If PvE content returns, it is more likely to appear as smaller-scale experiences with limited impact on the core competitive gameplay. However, Keller used the phrase "won't rule out," without confirming that any specific project is currently in development.
Overwatch initially planned a deeply cooperative campaign, envisioning players leveling up and customizing heroes within a story mode and advancing the lore in a more systematic way. That campaign was later canceled, replaced by shorter, simpler, and less frequently updated PvE missions, which eventually ceased production as well.
Keller believes that recreating a full campaign close to the original vision would now require a separate team and essentially be developed as "a whole new game." While there is still room for smaller PvE missions to return, the originally planned full campaign cannot be considered revived at this stage.
