A new classification in Australia for the 2009 release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has sparked speculation that the game might be remastered and released on modern consoles. Activision Blizzard has previously ported Black Ops and Black Ops II to modern platforms. A new version of Modern Warfare 2 might restore the multiplayer mode missing from the Modern Warfare 2 Remaster, but this has not yet been officially confirmed.
Based on the latest classification information from Australia, the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, released in 2009, may be coming to modern console platforms soon.
According to Insider Gaming, the Australian Classification Board rated this classic FPS as R18+ on October 1, 2026. The rating did not specify which platforms were involved, listing only "Computer Game." However, such ratings often indicate an impending release or official announcement, leading to widespread speculation that Activision Blizzard is preparing to bring one of its most popular titles back to the market.
This approach is not without precedent. Earlier this year, Activision Blizzard ported the original Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops II to PS4 and PS5, and both titles received Australian ratings ahead of time. Unlike full remakes or significant HD remasters, these ports were relatively straightforward, with some visual improvements. Reportedly, both games achieved decent sales (though they also faced considerable criticism), which might encourage Activision Blizzard to revisit another beloved entry in the series.
If Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 were to be re-released, it would be particularly noteworthy because the campaign-only 2020 remaster completely omitted the multiplayer mode. Therefore, a new port might give players the chance to experience the original multiplayer content on modern hardware. However, Activision has not confirmed any plans, and the Australian rating alone does not guarantee an imminent release. For now, players can only wait for an official announcement.
