GOG Explores New Model for Boxed PC Games, Allowing Direct Orders from Digital Libraries

GOG is exploring a new sales model for boxed PC games. According to the company's vision, users can select titles from their GOG digital library and place an order, after which the platform will ship the corresponding boxed version to their home, directly linking physical products with existing digital collections.

Marcin Paczynski, Senior Manager of Business Development and Partnerships at GOG, stated that this idea is not yet a confirmed service. The proposal has been discussed internally for several years, but a practical implementation method has yet to be found.

Selling physical games requires GOG to establish a business system different from its digital store, involving logistics, warehousing, physical production, and distribution. The company also needs to obtain separate licenses from publishers to produce and sell physical versions of their titles. Paczynski remains optimistic about the possibility of this vision becoming a reality in the future.

Before the full sales model takes shape, GOG is preserving the appearance and cultural memory of classic big-box PC games through 3D models and printable box art. Paczynski describes this as a "small step" toward the goal, but acknowledges that this approach cannot replace professionally produced physical packaging.

Meanwhile, Sony has announced that it will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games starting January 2028, citing changing consumer preferences. This decision has sparked criticism from some players regarding game ownership, resale, and preservation, while GOG's boxed sales concept still needs to address licensing and operational challenges.
