Was PlayStation Created to Get Revenge on Nintendo? Ken Kutaragi Denies the Claim

Ken Kutaragi, known as the "Father of PlayStation," recently shared new details about the brand's early days. He stated that he never intended to create PlayStation as a way to get back at Nintendo after their partnership ended. These remarks come from an interview with GamesIndustry, conducted during the Game Republic New Horizons event held in the UK.

Kutaragi also mentioned that he initially had no plans to build a brand that would compete with Nintendo. At the time, he didn't even anticipate that he would end up creating PlayStation. He recalled that what he was developing for Nintendo was a prototype subsystem, never imagining it would become the starting point for today's PlayStation series. Addressing the widespread narrative of "seeking revenge after being humiliated," he responded directly: "The story goes that I was greatly shocked and decided to seek revenge, but I never thought that way... Nor did I think we had to crush Nintendo."

Ken Kutaragi's description of the partnership breakdown was not tinged with resentment. He described Nintendo's decision to turn to Philips as a "bad shock," but soon came to see it as a "good shock" because Sony was now "free to do anything." In his view, the birth of PlayStation was more a result of Sony gaining autonomy after the partnership ended, rather than an act of revenge against Nintendo.
