Sony is engaged in a PS5 "firmware war" against hackers due to GTA 6

In recent weeks, advances in AI models have led to significant progress in hacking techniques for current console systems. While console hacking is typically a major issue that manufacturers strive to resolve as quickly as possible, Sony has another reason: with the imminent release of GTA6, Sony is engaged in a "firmware war" against hackers.

One month after the PS5 system software update to version 14.10.00, version 14.22.00.00 was released today. This minor update introduces several "system software security fixes," undoubtedly marking the latest move in Sony's firmware war against hackers.

This PS5 system update has drawn attention because it is reportedly closely tied to the release of GTA6 on November 19. According to PlayStation Game Size, a website that tracks updates to the PlayStation Network database, GTA6 will require firmware version 14.22.00 instead of the previous 14.10.00, which is unprecedented.

However, extreme situations call for extreme measures. Given that GTA6 is expected to be the best-selling title on PS5, Sony cannot tolerate any piracy vulnerabilities. In the AI era, even the smallest software loophole can have serious consequences. Moreover, piracy may only be one of the repercussions, as the game could potentially be emulated and recompiled into a native PC version before its official release, which would be disastrous for both Sony and Rockstar Games.

Even as Sony releases multiple PS5 firmware updates in succession, hackers and crackers are unlikely to give up. Foreign media predict that this conflict may even continue beyond the November 19 release of GTA6.
