Mod author EgrLapko has released a volumetric lighting mod for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered. This mod utilizes the game's own shadow maps to allow light to pass through fog, forming corresponding light beams shaped by objects such as arches, bridges, tree canopies, towers, fences, and city streets.
The new lighting effects are not screen filters overlaid on the image but are bound to the scene structure. The mod also darkens fog in shadowed areas to maintain the original game's contrast and visual style. Lighting processing occurs before bloom and tone mapping, allowing the effects to blend more naturally into the scene.
The mod automatically reads weather and time conditions: slight haze at noon, warm light beams at sunset, soft moonlight at night, and significantly reduced volumetric lighting during rain. Local light sources such as torches, campfires, and lanterns can also illuminate the surrounding fog, including the torch held by Geralt.
Compatibility includes the game's built-in ray tracing, path tracing, DLSS, and frame generation, as well as mods that modify fog effects like Fog Remastered. Under standard settings, the performance cost is approximately 0.5 milliseconds per frame. It is currently available for download via Nexus Mods.
