"The Curse" Drives the Plot with Awkward Satire! The Finale Concludes with an Anti-Gravity Death

The Showtime series The Curse offers a sharp satire of a couple's increasingly chaotic life, culminating in a sudden introduction of anti-gravity phenomena in the finale. Asher is ultimately sucked into the sky and drifts to his death in space, seemingly confirming the subtle supernatural hints scattered throughout the series.

Starring Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone, the series follows Whitney and Asher Siegel, a couple who host a show renovating and selling passive houses while juggling filming demands, housing issues, and the pressures of trying to conceive. Asher pays a girl $100 for footage but takes the money back once the cameras stop rolling, leading the girl to place a "curse" on him.

As the couple's life spirals out of control, the series builds tension through deadpan performances, awkward situations, and voyeuristic camera work, making their arguments and daily interactions feel particularly uncomfortable. Its targets of satire include the forced optimism of home renovation shows, white savior complexes, and performative social media culture.

After a time jump in the finale, Whitney is rushed to the hospital while giving birth, and Asher is successively pulled onto the ceiling and then into a tree. Firefighters misjudge the situation and saw off the branch, removing Asher's last anchor and sending him soaring upward until he drifts into space and dies. This abrupt shift pushes the show's surrealism to its most direct extreme, serving as the series' strangest conclusion.
