Rockstar Discusses GTA 6 Development: Commitment to Handcrafted Quality and AI Efficiency

Rockstar CEO Strauss Zelnick recently discussed the development approach for GTA 6, emphasizing that the Grand Theft Auto series remains committed to handcrafted creation. Meanwhile, Rockstar will continue to experiment with AI and machine learning tools to improve production efficiency and enhance the final product.

Zelnick stated that "AI" covers a wide range in the gaming industry, and machine learning, automation, and intelligent systems should not be simply equated with generative content. Video games have always relied on computers and various technologies for production, and Rockstar has long been engaged with AI and machine learning.

He explicitly stated in February this year that generative AI was not involved in the development of GTA 6. Teams under Rockstar continue to be responsible for a vast array of details, including advertising, vegetation, weapons, clothing, hair, tattoos, shadows, and water effects.

This statement primarily distinguishes between traditional AI and machine learning tools used to assist development, and generative AI that directly creates creative assets. While the development process of GTA 6 may have utilized certain broad AI technologies, this does not mean that art, music, voice acting, or world content has been replaced by generative AI. Currently, there are no verifiable instances proving that the final game contains generative AI-generated material.
